Facebook Powers More Than Half Of All Social Logins


Social Login AKA Social Sign-in is a convenient and fast way to sign in on to websites and applications without the lengthy sign-up procedures of filling out annoying, multiple question forms and setting up yet another password.


Among desktop users, facebook is the absolute market leader, powering more than 51 percent of all social logins in North America. Google+ is the second most popular service with 31 percent in North America.

Trailing facebook and Google+ are Yahoo with 15 percent and Twitter with 3 percent.

Among Mobile users, facebook has a larger lead, with 62 percent of logins, followed by Google+ with 26 percent, Twitter with 6 percent and Yahoo with 4 percent.

Overall, the North American market mirrors the rest of the world’s stats, where facebook leads with 53 percent, followed by Google at 28 percent and Yahoo at 13 percent.

The exception is APAC, where Google+ is far behind local services such as QQ and Sina.

Where social proof can come in to save the day?

Planning a family vacation isn't easy nor it is cheap. There are typically 3 to 5 big ticket items a delicate balancing act is needed to keep in-check. I’ll focus on the travel, hotel, meals-food, car rental & attractions.
I am avoiding gifts and souvenirs, that’s my wife’s department, thanks G_d for that.

So Selecting an Airline is usually pretty straight forward, options are limited to a handful, which are similar in features and comfort and ultimately selection will be based on the combination of price, itinerary (is a night flight a good idea with little ones?) and availability. The airline is often a local company, sometimes even your nations official carrier.

I would dare to say the same will be the case with car rentals, especially if you are planning on renting from the top brands, which again, a handful are available, all well known.

When it comes to hotels, meals-food and attraction, it is a different ball game. We are typically faced with a large variety of options, making selection more challenging, as selections vary a lot between the different companies-vendors and price difference is only the beginning.

So between safety, cleanliness, quality, and a gazillion more factors we probably cannot possibly examine being thousands of miles away, from where we are planning to spend our vacation at.

Peer Pressure and Social Proof

The relationship between Peer pressure and Social Proof, has many examples, from the number of Facebook ‘Likes’, Twitter and Google+ ‘Followers’,  YouTube ‘Views’ and ‘Likes’ to reviews and so on, on one end, and the popularity and reach of successful brands, on the other end.

Shoppers are more likely to select a product or service that has a larger number of followers  and endorsers. That’s why these numbers are often displayed on their web assets, from their website to blogs and social media pages & fan pages.
Picture this, two restaurants, side-by-side, one is full, the other empty, which will you more likely check-out first? Most dinners will check out the full one first.
-This is Peer Pressure in action, building up Social Proof in our minds.
Online behavior is no different, peer pressure influences shopper’s selections.
Here are a couple of examples:
  1. You are looking for an app, at the Apple app store. There are two apps that seem to be a fit, one with 10,000 reviews and the other with 10.
    Which one are you most likely to check out first?
  2. You are shopping for a hotel in some city you never visited before. There are two hotels that seem to match your budget & desired proximity to the beach. One has 1,500 likes & followers, the other none.
    Which one are you most likely to check out first?
You must have noticed I used “Which one are you most likely to check out first?”
-The reason for this is that, you guessed right, some shoppers will continue to check out the 2nd, 3rd options, however, these will only be those shoppers that their first option failed to convert/ sell them. In other words, those companies that are 2nd, 3rd options in this example were lucky, option 1 did not do a good job…
Now that we see there is a correlation between peer pressure and social proof, and that we cannot afford to rely on luck alone. What is your company doing to leverage that?
